Hey Crafty Friends!  Today I want to share a bunch of tips and project ideas for making “Stuffies”.  You may be wondering what “Stuffies” are.  They are basically soft signs that you can make with Canvas Duck Cloth for your front door, mantle or for dough bowl fillers.  They are super easy to make and very affordable.  No sewing required.  Just hot glue.  Plus, you can make them for every season and holiday and put your own unique spin on them.

Supplies:

  • 1-2 yards of Canvas Duck Cloth.  It is available at most fabric stores, Walmart and online.
  • Acrylic paint of your choice – available at most craft stores.  I personally like using Waverly Chalk Acrylic paint from Walmart.
  • Low temperature hot glue.  I prefer to use my Surebonder Cool Shot Mini.  It’s a great low temperature hot glue gun.  I have had way too many hot glue burns in the past and I have found that low temperature hot glue works just as well.  It is available at most craft stores and Walmart.
  • Polyfill.  I prefer Crafters Polyfill (Ideal for Doll Making) from Walmart.
  • Stencils to decorate your “Stuffie” – Magnolia Design Co has a great selection of stencils.
  • Permanent Ink for stencils.  I don’t ever use paint on my Magnolia stencils.  It can ruin them.  Paint dries fast and can permanently clog the delicate mesh on stencils.  For fabric projects I prefer to use Magnolia Permanent Ink on my stencils.
  • Permanent ink markers to add dots, dashes and squiggles.  I love this set of ink and chalk paste markers from Magnolia.  It comes with black, white, gold and silver pens.
  • Clear matte spray sealer
  • Scissors
  • Jute or craft wire for hanger

Canvas Duck Cloth Tips:

When purchasing Canvas Duck Cloth for “Stuffies” you will want the thickest cloth available.  It comes in a variety of colors.  I prefer the creamy oatmeal color. I do not wash my Canvas Duck Cloth before crafting with it.  I like my Canvas Duck Cloth to be stiff and washing makes it soft.  You can iron it if it is wrinkled.

Instructions:

  1. Decide shape and size “Stuffie” you want to make.
  2. Cut a front and back.
  3. Paint the front with your choice of paint colors.
  4. Decorate front with stencils and ink.
  5. Add fun dots, dashes and squiggles with permanent ink markers.
  6. Once embellishments are dry glue front and back together.  Leave an opening for stuffing.
  7. Note:  You may have to trim your back piece a little smaller to fit the front.  Paint can make drop cloth shrink.
  8. Fill with Polyfill to your desired fluffiness.
  9. Glue opening closed.

That’s it.  Easy Peasy!

Ideas for creating your “Stuffies”:

Think of seasons and what represents shape or item represents them.  Get creative.

  • Spring – hearts, carrots, bunnies, and spring flowers
  • Summer – beach shapes, watermelon, lemons, stars, flags, and summer flowers
  • Fall – leaves, acorns, pumpkins, and candy corn
  • Winter/ Christmas – ornaments, trees, and snowflakes

Thanks for stopping by.  I hope these ideas have inspired you to create your own stuffies!  Have fun.
