Who Loves a New T-shirt?

What girl doesn’t like to put on a cute new t-shirt or sweatshirt? I know that I certainly like to slip on a fresh new shirt! With the cost of clothing continuing to go up, it’s a real treat to make an adorable shirt for very low cost. So let’s get started and check out how…

No matter the time of year, Magnolia Design has a stencil that will set off a shirt and make it unique! You might ask where I purchase my solid color shirts. My favorite shirt brand is Color Comforts from Hobby Lobby, But, I also find shirts at Target, and I use Gildan brand from Wal-mart and Michael’s. You can use different styles – short sleeve boxy, long sleeve boxy, fitted, whatever your preference. You do not need to pre-wash the shirts before you stencil them, but if that is something that you prefer, then by all means do so.

I have found that stenciling with faith stencils is a wonderful way to share my faith. People ask questions about the shirt and I am then able to share with them not only how I made it, but why. At the bottom of this post, I will share links to all of the stencils that are available on my Magnolia website: magnoliadiy.com

When you stencil on fabric, of any kind, do you use Chalk Paste or Ink? ALWAYS use Ink on fabric of any kind…as you can see above, it is easy to tell the difference, Chalk Paste has a black cover and Ink has a white cover. Ink is also permanent and must be heat set to become washable! If you used Chalk Paste on fabric and tried to wash it, you would end up with a smeary mess!!

Magnolia recommends after stenciling to let the Ink dry for 24 hours. Next, How to you heat set the Ink to make it permanent? You can heat set the Ink with either an iron or a heat press. With an iron, put it on the cotton setting and be sure that you don’t use steam! Put a piece of parchment paper over the top of the Ink and press for 4-5 minutes on each side of the fabric. To use a heat press, set on 350 degrees, put a piece of parchment paper on top of the Ink and press for 30 seconds on each side of the fabric. Now, your item is permanent and ready to be washed and dried over and over!

I love to “jazz” up the sleeves of my shirts. How do I do it? I use pattern stencils: either on the inside of the sleeve and then roll up the cuff to have a patterned cuff, or put a pattern on the outside of the sleeve and then roll the plain side of the cuff up, or make the entire sleeve patterned. Does the pattern have to meet perfectly at the shoulder? No it doesn’t…you will never notice where it begins and ends. TIP: do not go over and over the stencil with the squeegee and Ink OR use too much ink. Both of those things could cause the ink to bleed. If your squeegee is bending when you use it, then you are pressing too hard on it.

Now that the weather is getting cooler, I am loving my stenciled sweatshirts to keep me warm and toasty! Wal-mart has a great selection of solid colored sweatshirts and longsleeved t-shirts. I not only stenciled some of the sweatshirts above, but I also made some fabric flowers to embellish them. If you add flowers to your shirts, make sure that you use fabric glue so that they will be washable.

I hope that I have inspired you to make yourself a new t-shirt or sweatshirt…OR to make one for a gift for someone special. When you’re asked where you found the shirt, you can say “I made it just for you!”
