Hi there Crafty Friends! As you probably know, my projects are usually Faith, Family or Flower based. Today, we are going to talk about how to make some of the many flowers that we have made together on DIY Dreaming. I’ve made flowers from: 5 1/2″ wide burlap ribbon from Walmart, Felt, Canvas Duckcloth, Painters Drop Cloth, Zippers, Canning jar Lids, Denim, Old quilts, Brown postal paper and more!
Let’s start with everyone’s all-time favorite, the pulled string flower. Start with 5 1/2 inch burlap ribbon that you can find at Wal-mart, in the jewelry section of their craft department. I usually start with an 18 inch length of ribbon. Then, I begin to pull the strings out, starting from the center of one end of the piece. I continue to pull the strings out until I have 3 rows of strings left on both edges. Tip: you can save the strings to use for future crafting. I tie them together in the center to keep them from getting tangled. Tip #2: use a Surebonder Cool Shot glue gun because this project is glue intensive and you don’t want to burn your fingers!!! Watching one of the tutorials listed at the bottom of this post, will make this entire process much clearer. I have used these flowers in many, many ways…so you will definitely want to learn how to make them!
This is one of my all-time favorite ways that I used a pulled string flower!! I made this cross from Dollar Tree nautical rope and then embellished the center with a pulled string flower, topped off with a mother-of-pearl button. This project is simple, yet gorgeous!
Who would ever guess that these flowers are made from canning jar lids? Yes, some canning jar lids, Dollar Tree nautical rope, twigs from my backyard, pieces of lace. some strips of cotton duck cloth, and some polyfil from Wal-mart. You probably already have a lot of these things in your craft stash or your pantry!
Next up are my fun twirly-doo’s! These are made from pieces of felt that you can find at Hobby Lobby for 28 cents each. I used multiple colors of felt, wire floral stems, my cool shot glue gun, a paper gift bag stenciled with a Magnolia stencil and Chalk Paste: MagnoliaDIY.com and some jute string. Tip: I like to use dry split peas in my vases to stick my flowers in. They are inexpensive and keep the flowers in place. Look at these beautiful rolled rosettes! Here I am using them to create a necklace. You can use lace, fabric of all kinds, and ribbon to create these flower. Wal-mart carries multi-colored Jelly Rolls of fabric that make adorable rosettes. Tip: again, these are glue intensive, so make sure that you are using a cool shot glue gun, or the lowest temp on your particular glue gun AND some finger protectors!
Above you can see that I used denim to make a rolled rosette necklace. You can also make bracelets to go with them. Then, I made a banner with the rolled rosettes and added petals made from canvas duck cloth, to finish off the petals I embellished them with more mother-of-pearl buttons. The picture on the far right, shows a candle garter that I made. It has a rolled rosette on it that is attached to canvas duck cloth and embellished with a beautiful pearl button from Totally Dazzled: https://bit.ly/3izyYfH
I love to add some pizzaz to my dining table…it even makes grilled cheese and tomato soup seem special when you have something lovely, like this table runner, to look at. For this particular table runner, I took some cotton duck cloth ticking fabric and tore it into the size that I wanted. I think there is something so satisfying about tearing fabric! I gathered a ruffle at each end of the runner and have the pattern going in the opposite direction for visual interest. To finish it off, I added rolled rosettes with leaves made out of the same fabric. Wouldn’t this be a charming addition to add to any table?
Here we have some flowers made out of zippers. Yes, you read that correctly…ZIPPERS! Metals zippers are the best choice for making these type of flowers. You can often find these zippers at a resale shop, a garage sale, or you might even have some in your sewing stash! I used some of them in a hoop project, and others on bracelets.
